VITA Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Herald Community Center partnered with the IRS for the VITA Program in 2021 and expanded to local churches in 2022. By 2024, seven partner churches and over 200 volunteers helped our San Gabriel and Rowland Heights centers file 3,000 tax returns for the elderly and underserved.

 

LITC Low Income Taxpayer Clinic

In 2023, Herald Community Center began collaborating with the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service for the Low Income Tax Clinics (LITC). LITC offers free assistance for low-income individuals, including IRS dispute resolution and taxpayer education, provided by volunteer CPAs and independent of the IRS. In 2023, we provided 450 consultations and held tax seminars for over 300 community members.

Social Welfare Programs

To assist low-income families in alleviating financial stress, Herald Community Center offers the following food stamp services:
  1. Assistance with submitting food stamp applications.
  2. Setting up a mybenefitscalwin.org online account to easily check the status of food stamps and Medi-Cal benefits for greater convenience and speed.

Starting in February 2024, the Chinese Christian Herald Crusades (CCHC) will collaborate with the Los Angeles County Food Equity Fund to launch the “Wellness 4 Everyone” program. This initiative aims to promote awareness of food nutrition and equity rights. The program will include:

  • Column and recipe publication in Herald Monthly
  • Sharing on Social Media
  • Healthy Diet Workshops 
  • Food safety handling training and catering staff certification courses
  • Fresh meal kits 
  • Food stamp application

Assistance in social welfare applications for the needy, including: Senior & Disabled Bus Pass, Electricity and Gas Discount Programs, In-home Supportive Services etc. Online application services for EDD, Social Security and Medicare have been added since 2020.

Fellowship

Challengers Program:

Explore potential and develop social skills for the mentally challenged youths through different activities and provide a platform for the parents to connect and support each other.  

Son-Light Fellowship

A support and caring platform for the physically challenged individuals. They meet regularly for singspiration, bible study and fellowship.

Senior Fellowship

Provide activities that benefit the elderly physically and spiritually.

Peace Senior Ministry

Regular visits to the senior apartments, providing elderly with services such as letter reading, form filling, various informative seminars, computer and mobile phone classes, and festive celebration.

Gambling Addiction Support Group

Provide support to those struggling with gambling addiction and their families.
